Abstract:

Land cover classification (LCC) is an essential task in remote sensing, and it is essential to a number of activities, such as land-use planning, natural resource handling, etc. India, being a vast and diverse country, poses several challenges for LCC due to its varied terrain, land use, and climatic conditions. In this paper, we present a literature survey on the problem of land cover classification in India and highlight the gap in research work concerning the North-Eastern part of India. Our literature survey reveals that there is a considerable amount of work done on land cover classification in India, mainly using satellite imagery and machine learning techniques. However, major cities and urban areas have been the focus of the majority of study efforts, while the rural and remote regions of India, especially the North-Eastern part, have not received much attention. This neglect is mainly due to the lack of accessible and high-quality data, as well as the complex terrain and dense vegetation cover in this region.
