Study of a Direct Optically Controlled Frequency Selective Surface

In this letter, a direct optically controlled frequency selective surface (OCFSS) is proposed to eliminate the negative impact of traditional electrically controlled frequency selective surfaces. By coating organic materials on silicon chips to form semiconductor heterojunctions, the photoconductive effect of the chips is effectively improved and using lasers to excite the heterojunctions into optically controlled switches. The response of optical switches to the operating frequency of incident electromagnetic waves can be increased to the Ku-frequency band. At the same time, a design scheme for the direct optical feed system of OCFSS is introduced, and a prototype of OCFSS is designed, manufactured, and measured. The results show that the direct OCFSS technology can realize effective FSS function, and has fast switching speed and good state isolation, avoiding the influence of feeder and environment electromagnetic coupling on FSS.
