Study on temperature characteristics of damping capacitor with different potting materials under typical working conditions

The damping capacitor is an important part of the thyristor converter valve. The damping circuit composed of the damping capacitor and the damping resistor in series can suppress the commutation overshoot voltage generated by the thyristor converter valve during the shutdown process. The operating temperature of the damping capacitor will affect its performance and life. In order to reasonably evaluate its operating condition, it is necessary to study its internal temperature distribution. In this paper, based on the typical working conditions of damping capacitor, two different potting materials of damping capacitor temperature field simulation. The temperature distribution of the damping capacitor under typical working conditions and the influence of different types of potting materials on the temperature characteristics of the damping capacitor were explored and obtained.
