Winding Selection for Wound-Rotor Synchro

The present study examines how the accuracy of wound-rotor (WR) synchro used in industrial applications is affected by different winding arrangements. The most commonly used synchro type is WR. In this article, the WR-synchro with on-tooth winding is introduced. Also, a comparison is done to provide the influence of various types of windings on synchro’s performance. Four different winding types are studied for the stator of a WR-synchro including on-tooth overlapping winding, on-tooth nonoverlapping winding, distributed lap winding (chain), and distributed concentric winding. The rotor winding is assumed to be either single-or multiphase. In fact, the study also evaluated the impact of the damper winding. The analysis is conducted using a time-stepping finite element method (FEM), and the best sensor taking both the accuracy and simplicity of practical implementation into account is constructed and tested. The results obtained from the experimental measurements are in good agreement with those from the finite element analysis, confirming the accuracy of the findings.
