Dual-Receiver Based Naturally Decoupled Coil Structure With Improved Rotational Misalignment Tolerance for WPT Systems

Multiple coils are used in inductive power transfer (IPT) systems to ensure the effectiveness of high-power applications. Furthermore, recent research indicates that dual receivers can function well in dynamic wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. However, the system efficiency reduces if the cross-coupling among the same side coils is not eliminated. In this article, a new IPT system with dual receivers that have similar characteristics as dual Double D coil (DD) receivers has been introduced. Besides mitigating the mutual inductances of the same-side coils, the proposed dual receivers use fewer components than the capacitive decoupling method. Additionally, the proposed coils can receive power throughout a full 360° rotation and have good rotational misalignment performance. Compared to the conventional dual DD receiver, the proposed system can achieve higher efficiency and deliver significantly more power in the misalignment range of 45°–135°. Also, the proposed coupler gets full power compared to dual DD receivers at 90° misalignment, whereas conventional dual DD receivers receive zero power. A scaled-down experimental setup is used to verify the feasibility of the proposed structure. The proposed system was also experimentally tested for applications with dual output channels. It has been observed that in this case, the proposed system has also better rotational misalignment tolerance, lateral misalignment tolerance, and higher efficiency at different loads compared to the conventional system.
