Active Rectifiers and Source‐side Inverters

This chapter is on the design of three‐phase active PWM AC/DC rectifiers and three‐phase source‐side PWM DC/AC inverters. Both active rectifiers and source‐side inverters have their three‐phase AC side connected to the AC source. The chapter discusses the design of the power stage of the active rectifier and the source‐side inverter, as a function block or subsystem of the overall three‐phase converter. It provides the models for the constraints as functions of design conditions and design variables: AC source harmonic current TDD; power loss; control performance; ride‐through time; DC‐link stability; reliability; device maximum junction temperature; device peak voltage; AC inductor parameters; and decoupling capacitor parameters. The chapter also provides the design optimization problem for the active rectifier and the source‐side‐inverter. It examines the impact of topology through two most important aspects: the circuit modeling aspect and the device modeling aspect.
