Synthesis and Dielectric Characterization of Iron-Doped Forsterite Coated Titanium-Based Medical Implants

This article investigates the dielectric properties of iron-doped forsterite-coated Titanium (Ti) substrates. Specifically, the sol-gel method is used to prepare iron-doped forsterite solutions with different weights percent of iron. The prepared solutions are then coated on a Ti substrate by applying the dip coating technique. Samples are then tested for their structure and surface morphology using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The prepared samples’ dielectric properties (dielectric constant, dielectric loss, alternating current conductivity, loss tangent, and relaxation time) are investigated at room temperature using a vector network analyzer (VNA) assembly in the frequency range of 200 MHz–20 GHz. Moreover, the effect of iron on the structure, morphology, and dielectric properties of the sample is also discussed thoroughly by concentrating on its application in medical implants. Results reveal that Ti substrate coated with iron-doped forsterite might be an appropriate implant material for biomedical applications. Also, the higher the weight percent of iron in the sample, the better the dielectric performance of the sample.
