Visitor Counting in a Museum with a 2D LiDAR Sensor

We propose a visitor counting method with a low-cost two-dimensional LiDAR sensor. Our visitor tracking box also uses two detection planes reflected by a mirror, vertical and one for counting visitors and estimating visitor heights, and horizontal one for counting and tracking visitor positions. We conducted a series of evaluation experiments at a science museum, and had an accuracy of approximately 81.0% in estimating the total number of visitors, while with less accuracy in counting children. Our vertical sensing plane allows us to estimate visitor heights at a very high accuracy rate of 96.1% for people taller than 120 (cm).
