Enabling Established on Required Navigation Performance Usage to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Required Navigation Performance (RNP) approaches, coupled with the Established on RNP (EoR) separation standard, enable aircraft to fly a more direct path to the runway and reduce distance flown and corresponding carbon emissions at low altitudes. During simultaneous parallel instrument approach operations, standard terminal separation requires aircraft to fly extended downwinds before turning onto final approach. The additional distance and time flown at low altitude and in level-flight needed to achieve this separation contribute to additional operator costs and carbon emissions. This paper shares benefits observed at existing U.S. airports using EoR and provides a framework to identify future candidate airports for EoR, assess candidate airport readiness for RNP approach utilization, and estimate potential benefits from track-mileage reductions resulting in reduced carbon emissions.
