Pulsed Transformer Magnetic Core Comparison of Different Materials for Pulsed Power Applications

Pulse transformers are imperative to specific pulsed power systems including inductive voltage adders and induction accelerator cells. Magnetic cores as a component are valued for their high permeability. Due to proposed applications and design restrictions, two types of cores were examined: ferrite and nanocrystalline potted cores. The ferrite cores tested were composed of Ni-Zn. The nanocrystalline cores had an oxide layer applied to the outer surface of the tape as they were wound for turn-to-turn insulation. The cores are required to be reliable in multiple, high-rate pulse operations with low losses. A description of the testing equipment, data analysis method, measured saturation values, and core losses as a function of magnetization rate are presented.
