Virtual Synchronous Generator Control Integrated into a Microgrid

The rise of renewable energies has led to distributed generation, a concept involving collaboration between renewable and traditional energy sources. In this context, the virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) play a crucial role by facilitating the connection between these sources and improving system stability in the face of voltage and frequency fluctuations in the grid. Distributed generation can be classified into two common scenarios: multiple renewable energy sources connected to sources operating independently of the grid or the electrical grid while supplying power to an equivalent total load. In either case, power distribution management under load can be significantly improved by employing parallel connections of two or more VSGs. However, a thorough understanding of these connections’ control criteria is essential, as incorrect parameterization for control values can affect the desired response and grid stability. This paper examines grid-connected and isolated connections, analyzing the parallel connection of two VSGs with different characteristics, each employing its respective control strategy. Simulation results demonstrate these connections’ effectiveness when appropriate control criteria are followed, showing their potential in practical applications.
