Smart Helmet for Coal Mine Worker Safety through Live Data Tracking

Increasing worker safety is an imperative concern given the multitude directly involved in mining, the large financing and operating costs of mining projects, the uncertainty of various mining outcomes, and the perilous nature of mining conditions. The mine worker position detection system which is a unit of this smart helmet is used to detect the position of the worker in which tunnel/mine lane he is working in. When it comes to dangerous working conditions in deep mines, a real-time and instantaneous monitoring and warning system is essential to boost safety. If a worker gets stuck in a tunnel, then this detection system detects the worker using an RF signal and Wi-Fi. The sensors are attached to the worker's helmet. As the worker moves through the tunnel, sensors on the helmet detect flammable gas (LPG) and send a signal to the exit station via Wi-Fi. It is connected to the external control room in a tunnel via Wi-Fi. For our demo project, we are using Arduino as the controller, and an Ethernet shield is used to connect the system via Wi-Fi. The position of the worker is determined by the tunnel map. Each tunnel is Wi-Fi enabled by a repeater to increase network range. The gas and temperature sensor sends a signal to the control room, so the control room gets an alert and the status of each tunnel. Each helmet has an emergency button so that the worker presses the button and dispatch immediately receives help for the worker.
