Strategies for Designing Cognitively Demanding Assessments Within Math and Physics MOOCs

We discuss the structure of our MOOCs to support the development of complex problem solving skills and describe how we utilize automatically-graded assessments and other modalities to support learning. We also explore how students interact with these course components and how there is a tendency to avoid the more cognitively challenging problems that require the learner to construct a formula, drawing, or draw inferences from outside knowledge or material.
