SyncRim - A modern Simulator for Synchronous Circuits implemented in Rust

Graphical simulation of synchronous circuits allows for visualizing control and data paths along with component states and is often advantageous in comparison to traditional RTL simulation waveform deciphering. Prominent use cases include detailed RTL simulation of CPUs and MCUs, system level simulation and hardware/software co-design. In this paper we report on the design and ongoing open source development of SyncRim, a modern graphical simulator for synchronous circuits implemented in the Rust language. We highlight key design features of SyncRim by implementing a simple RISC-V core along with Rust based toolchain for RISC-V code generation and code execution.
