Surface Modification of Co-Cr-Mo Alloy to Improve Antibacterial and Biocompatibility

This article uses laser direct writing to structurally process Co-Cr-Mo alloy, forming periodic microstructures then silver film is deposited on the structured surface to achieving a functional surface that combines antibacterial and biocompatibility. The antibacterial effects and cell proliferation were tested on silver-plated surfaces with different periodic structures of 20μm and 40μm. The results showed that the modified Co-Cr-M alloy had a 100% antibacterial rate on both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and all samples exhibited excellent biocompatibility. The structured surface can promote cell proliferation and modulate cell growth morphology. This technique has great potential in addressing bacterial infections caused by medical implants.
