Experimental Procedure for Accurate Performance Evaluation of RFID Tag Placed on Human Tissue

This paper presents a simple and rigorous experimental methodology to design RFID tags optimized for on-body applications. The RFID chip and the body tissue mimicking gel must be accurately determined experimentally before any attempt is made to design the RFID antenna. A 5-fold reduction in antenna efficiency and read range can be considered a general rule of thumb when comparing free space and on-body scenarios for RFID antennas built on FR4 substrates.
