Electronic Equipment Waste Generated by Computers and its Effect on Public Health in India

E-waste means waste generated by electronics products that are obsolete and unused. This consist of a large variety of electronic appliances such as home appliances, PC, mobile phones and all which are run by electricity. E-waste includes both ferrous and nonferrous material, glass, plastic, etc. out of these, ferrous material stands in the top by weight and plastic stands second. These are generally ended up in landfills thus detreating ecosystems in one or another way. In terms of toxicity, E-waste can be categorized into two, first is hazardous, and the second is non-hazardous substances. Hazardous material includes thrash metals particularly Hg, Cd, Cr and Pb, CFC (chloro-fluoro-carbon), PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), PCBs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), and PCDD/F polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin furans. In this paper, we studied about various toxic effects generated by these waste and its effect on human health in India.
