Photovoltaic Hosting Capacity for Distribution Network Using Statistical Approach

Photovoltaic (PV) hosting capacity, which refers to the maximum amount of PV that can be stably integrated into the grid, is important to consider when integrating PV systems into the grid due to the ability of violations to the network such as overloading and voltage fluctuations. In the literature, various analysis methods were proposed to estimate the penetration of PV, which is proper to install into the distribution networks without negative impacts. This paper presents a statistical approach to calculate the hosting capacity of solar power plants in a practical 35kV distribution network in Vietnam. The uncertainties of PV production and power consumption are also considered to determine the probability of risks to the grid. The results of this study show the maximum PV hosting capacity for the distribution network under consideration and the impact of its integration on the voltage profile in the distribution network. This study highlights the difference between summer and winter scenarios in estimating the PV hosting capacity. The paper also considers the geographical conditions to determine which locations are suitable for future PV installations.
