Methods for Determining the Spectral Composition of LED Light Emission with the Use of Discrete Data from Spectroradiometers

The paper explores various methods for determining the spectral composition of the LED light sources emission by employing discrete readings obtained from spectroradiometers. Proposed is a novel approach to defining a mathematical model that accurately describes the spectral distribution of LEDs, by applying characteristic mathematical functions. Put forward, in this regard, is a clear definition for the use of “Envelop Function Model” (EFM). Suggested, furthermore, is an evaluation of the method's application in the analysis of typical LED light sources. The results obtained are then compared with those attained via the “Trapezoidal Rule” (TR) method, which serves as an integral characteristic of discrete functions. The methods, advanced in the paper, are considered quite appropriate for estimating the proportion of emission within a given wavelength range relative to the total emission in the visible spectrum. The method is equally applicable in assessing the compatibility of light sources that adhere to the standard EN 62471:2009 regarding the “Photo-biological safety of lamps and lamp system” [8], and in the provision of quantitative assessments of the emission proportions within specific wavelengths.
