Exploration of Propulsion-Guidance System for HTS Maglev Based on Permanent Magnet Electrodynamic Wheel

The permanent magnet electrodynamic wheel (PMEDW) system is a competitive alternative for achieving linear propulsion due to its integrated propulsion-guidance capability. In this article, an integrated propulsion-guidance system comprising a conductive plate and a PMEDW is developed and investigated for implementation in a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) maglev prototype. First, an analytical model combined with a simulation model is established and verified through experimental results. Furthermore, the impact of conductive plate thickness and working air gap on propulsion performance is analyzed. The correlation between the PMEDW system and the permanent magnet guideway (PMG) is also explored. Moreover, the characteristics of the completed propulsion-guidance HTS system are studied, including propulsion ability and guidance performance. Finally, a small-scale experimental prototype with an auxiliary PMEDW is developed, and dynamic experiments are carried out. The outcomes demonstrate that the proposed propulsion system can sufficiently drive the HTS maglev module and enhance the guidance capability. The findings can serve as a reference for subsequent applications of the HTS maglev train traction system.
