Scaling of a Magnetically Levitated Moving-Magnet Planar Motor based on Payload and Pole Pitch

This paper considers the scaling of a magnetically levitated moving-magnet planar motor with respect to the pole pitch and payload mass. A semi-analytical optimization based on the harmonic model of the magnet array is used to optimize the magnet height, the coil bundle width, the coil length and the ratio between width of the magnet magnetized in the z-direction and the pole pitch. Afterwards, an analysis of the root mean square acceler-ation of the mover is performed based on a thermal model of each optimized coil. Two scenarios are considered for the optimization. The first scenario limits the horizontal area of the magnet array and examines the range of payload masses for a set of pole pitches. The second scenario fixes the amount of poles in the magnet array and scales the geometry and payload according to the pole pitch.
