Effects of Standard and Non-standard Lightning Impulse on Dry-type Nomex Insulation Samples

In this article, the effect of five different non-standard lightning impulses and one standard impulse have been investigated on seven different types of Nomex dry-type insulation. For this investigation, seven test samples are prepared in the laboratory with Nomex paper insulation along with nano-composites-based varnish. Therefore, the polarization and depolarization currents (PDC) of the test samples are measured at 1 kV/mm D.C. field stress. Based on the measured PDC data of the test samples, their equivalent insulation model (i.e. Debye Model parameters) are estimated. Therefore, in the simulation platform, the standard and five different non-standard impulse voltages have been applied across the insulation equivalent model. In this context, the generated response currents are recorded for each sample. Finally, the recorded currents are compared with each other. From this investigation, it is observed that the current magnitude is reduced for the nano-particle-based composite insulation compared to the pure Nomex-based dry-type insulation.
