Correlation Between Grounding Grid Design Parameters and Safety Thresholds in MV/LV Networks

As the demand for clean, efficient and reliable supply of energy increases, the impact of substation grounding grid design parameters on safety performance of grounding systems, in power distribution networks, has become a critical aspect that has yet to be thoroughly examined. This paper investigates the influence of various grounding grid design parameters, such as the number of rods installed as well as the grid size and mesh layout density, on safety thresholds in scenarios where the soil exhibits both homogenous and non-homogeneous characteristics. The study aims to provide comprehensive data on how these design parameters correlate with impedance, touch and step voltages, and consequently evaluate the safety performance of the grounding systems of distribution substation. The findings of this research are meant to contribute to deepening the scientific literature concerning grounding grid design optimization, while ensuring compliance with safety standards and mitigation of risks associated with distribution substation operations.
