Analysis of Electricity Usage for Households with Electric Vehicles and Photovoltaics in the UK* Note: Sub-Titles are Not Captured in Xplore and Should Not be Used

The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems with electric vehicles (EVs) is likely to contribute significantly to decarbonising the UK's energy system. However, accomplishing this goal will require a substantial investment in both grid and generation capacity due to the changing amount and pattern of electricity usage. The effectiveness of EVs in reducing carbon emissions depends on the carbon footprint of the power source, and the expansion of PV power generation requires the development of local storage to minimise negative effects on the distribution grid. This paper utilises two different data sources to analyse and compare energy consumption patterns for households with PVs and EVs in the UK. The study identifies peak times of consumption that are likely to cause network overload in the event of high or clustered uptake of renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the paper analyses energy consumption data from households with an unknown energy mix to identify potential EV customers. The findings reveal that PV generation reduced net demand during the day, resulting in net export, especially outside of the winter months. The study results provide insights into the implications of utilising these technologies on the network and can facilitate planning for the UK's low-carbon future.
