A Control Strategy of Thermostatically Controlled Loads for Power System Frequency Regulation

With the higher proportion of renewable energy generation connected to the grid, the frequency stability of power system faces greater challenge. Utilizing demand response (DR) technology for frequency regulation has become a new and effective method. Among various kinds of demand side resources, there are some natural advantages for the thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) due to their high proportion in the total load and capability of storing thermal energy, which makes short-term regulation will not affect the user's electricity consumption comfort. This paper takes inverter air-conditioners as typical TCLs to establish time-frequency domain model and evaluate the potentiality of TCLs for providing frequency regulation service. Then, the significance of TCLs participating in frequency regulation on the frequency stability of power system is analyzed by simulation. Finally, a hybrid control method considering user's electricity consumption comfort for large-scale TCLs participating in power system frequency regulation is proposed.
