Techno-Economic Evaluation of Horizontal Axis Tidal Stream Turbines in San Bernardino Strait, Philippines

According to studies, the Philippines, an archipelagic country, has a large ocean renewable energy capability, with a total potential of 170 GW. This research looked at the energy potential, performance of horizontal axis tidal stream technology, and economics of turbines in the San Bernardino Strait. Results show a yearly average velocity of 1.28m/s in the study area. A map was also created to identify potential deployment sites based on certain exclusion criteria. The study analyzed three turbines: Seagen S, SR2000, and TiDEL. All turbines performed well in terms of energy generation, but TiDEL comes out on top due to its lower cut-in, rated speed requirements, LCOE, and electricity cost. The use of tidal energy modeling software will also aid in the optimization, energy prediction, and economic evaluation of various technologies in the area. Considering this, harnessing the potential of the San Bernardino Strait can assist the Philippines' National Renewable Energy Board in meeting its additional target capacity from ocean energy by 2030.
