Application of Modern GIS in Smart Grid

The international's goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through renewable energy sources by increasing solar and wind turbine farms. Simultaneously, the number of private micro-projects for residential rooftop solar panels is significantly increasing. As a result, the culture of consumers using electricity has changed, influencing the demand for electricity provided by the main supplier. However, there is a big concern about the stability of electricity production using renewable resources. Therefore, new management for the network is required for monitoring the demand and supplying the required electricity constantly. The smart grid is an application and technique that can help authorities and consumers achieve their goals and provide better services. This paper will discuss the application of modern GIS that will assist the modern management systems for implementing smart grids successfully as well as provide important information for consumers for optimal use of their microgrids. Two examples of asset inspection and demand monitoring will be given, and their result will be discussed here. Web GIS and online GIS methods were used for asset inspection. The focus on asset inspection was based on the effectiveness of web GIS and online GIS in monitoring and coordinating the assets without time restriction. The second example focused on the variation of the demand and how modern GIS can help the authorities to manage the grid.
