Heterogeneous Cathode Work Function Measurement and Interpretation: A case Study with SrVO3

Work function is a key electron emission property. However, questions remain on how to unambiguously measure and interpret the work function. In this proceeding, using polycrystalline SrVO3 perovskite as an example, we clarify a few key issues in work function characterization. We show that the vacuum level, which is significantly affected by the patch and external electric fields, needs to be carefully selected to obtain a clear work function interpretation.
