Comparative Analysis Between Distributed and Fractional Slot Concentrated Winding of a Wound Rotor Synchronous Machine

A comparative analysis between distributed winding (DW) and fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) synchronous machine with electromagnetic excitation is presented in this paper. The main interest is to highlight the advantages brought by using FSCW over DW synchronous machines in terms of both efficiency and fabrication costs, for certain applications such as wind turbine, hydro generation, automotive, industries in continuous development. For those reasons, an 8 poles synchronous machine is studied in both cases, with 72 stator slots for the DW structure and 9 stator coils for the FSCW structure respectively, with the same dimensional constrains and rotor architecture, for comparation. Simulation results using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are analyzed, and conclusions are presented.
