Analysis of the Evolution of Electricity Production in Romania

In the context of climate change and the global energy crisis, the demand for electricity from renewable energy sources has been set as a priority. Compared to 2010, installed capacity in power plants in Romania has decreased due to the closure or conservation of some thermal power plants. This decrease was not significant, as many renewable energy plants were commissioned. More than half of the electricity needs of renewable energy plants were covered. In the context of encouraging investment in clean energy sources, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation is expected to increase. In order to avoid imbalances in the national energy system, it is necessary to take measures in terms of investments in transmission and distribution lines and to encourage energy production as much as possible at the point of consumption. The paper presents an analysis of electricity production and consumption between 2010 and May 2023. It also analyses the energy mix of electricity generation sources (renewable and conventional), and at the end it makes an estimate of electricity consumption for 2024. The analysis shows a significant increase in the share of renew ables in total electricity generation in Romania.
