Inner-Rotor And Outer-Rotor PMSG Designs for Novel Offshore Wind Turbines

This paper presents a detailed design methodology for the inner and outer rotor structures of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (PMSGs) for the novel X-rotor offshore wind turbine concept. For the X-rotor system, the design results are evaluated in terms of efficiency, power factor, weight, and temperature rise. ANSYS electromagnetic and thermal simulations are used for further validation. Inner rotor machines cause less heat to be dissipated, while outer rotor machines are lighter, have the highest power density, and have the smallest outer diameter and losses. Results from this research can be applied to applications that require electric machines that are lighter, more powerful, and have improved thermal performance.
