Numerical Analysis and Experimental Validation of a Series Hybrid Excitation Synchronous Machine

Numerical analysis, using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations, of a series hybrid excitation synchronous machine (HESM), along with experimental test results are presented into this paper. The proposed machine consists of a distributed three-phase winding placed into the 36 stator slots and a four poles rotor from which two are with surface mounted permanent magnets and the other two hosts field excitation coils. This way, the advantages of permanent magnet and electromagnetic excitation of synchronous machines are combined, providing both high efficiency and flexibility. The particularities of the working characteristics of such a machine are presented and discussed.
