Two Fully Integrated SiGe Radar Sensors for the Detection of Particle Streams Using Dual-Frequency Measurements

In this work, two fully integrated radar sensors based on the SiGe technology are presented for the characterization of physical parameters of particle streams with a minimal mean diameter of 80 µm. These sensors generate signals at frequencies of 90 GHz and 150 GHz, respectively. To provide additional characterization, simultaneous dual-frequency measurements using both sensors by passing a particle stream through a tube made out of acryl are performed. Both sensors are integrated into a bistatic antenna setup, and subsequently, the 150 GHz sensor is assembled into a quasi-monostatic system to improve the signal-to-noise-ratio and enable the detection of smaller particles. All data is obtained for various mass flows.
