Radar-sensing based on non-contiguous OFDM signals using Compressed Sensing

This paper discusses an approach for increasing the sensing bandwidth of a communication system using OFDM signals. Against the background of the ever-increasing congestion of the spectrum, the fusion of discontinuous bands for radar sensing was recently discussed. But, if even these bands are not available, as it is the case for a genuine Joint Communications and Sensing architecture, this approach cannot be used due to a lack of dedicated bands for radar. Assuming a multi-carrier signal, this gapped-spectrum point of view will be mirrored onto the carriers of the communication signal of a single system itself. That is, the carriers will become the supporting points for the sensing and are generated in such a way, that the individual carrier positions are distributed over the available spectrum, which in turn increases the covered bandwidth. With respect to the radar sensing, this structure defines a problem solvable by Compressed Sensing.
