Simplified Lumped Parameter Thermal Modelling of Low Power Salient-Pole Synchronous Generators

To assess the loading capability under different operating conditions, improving the system utility, preventing overheat and insulation breakdown of electrical machines, thermal modeling and analyzing are generally required in the design stage. In this paper, thermal modelling and analyzing a synchronous generator (SG) are proposed to estimate the temperature rise in its different parts. The model is developed using electrical circuit’s simulators, namely PSIM. The computations results are compared with the experiments results. In addition, different methods of thermal design and analysis for different types of SGs are briefly discussed and results of their applications are compared.
