3 Recognizing Bias in Facial Recognition

Now that we've discussed the fundamentals of AI and bias, let's look deeper into how race and bias are coded into technology, with disastrous results. On a cold day in January 2020, Robert Julian-Borchak Williams was at work at an automotive supply store when he got a strange call. Detroit police wanted him to go to the precinct and be arrested. Williams, who lives in a suburb north of Detroit, thought it was a prank call. He hadn't committed any crimes; why would someone want to arrest him? Williams told the caller, “Well, I'm leaving work in 15 minutes, so unless you can get here in 15 minutes you can come to my home.” He shrugged off the call, finished up his work for the day, and drove home.
