EEG-ECG Extraction for Wearable All-in-One Healthcare Device

Stroke and ischemic heart conditions are the leading cause of death; thus, they require prompt diagnosis and treatment. Two non-invasive methods with high sensitivity that can aid in early diagnosis are Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG). However, traditional measurements are usually performed in hospitals and require multiple electrodes placed at different positions on the body, which is hard to measure and determine your health continuously. Thus a compact wearable device that can measure both ECG and EEG signals is needed. This paper proposes an extracting model called EEG-ECG Extraction (EEE), a combination of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Wavelet shrinkage techniques to determine both EEG and ECG at the same time from a single type of bio-electrical signal from a few sensors at the head. The results show that important information such as heart rate, QRS complex, and QT interval can be determined from EEG signals through ECG extraction. The correlation between the extracted and original signals is also used to evaluate the proposed technique.
