Evaluation of Hand Functions Using Sensor-Based Wearable Hand Motion Analysis Device

Achieving accurate and quantitative evaluation of hand functions is essential for effective rehabilitation and training programs. This study aimed to develop a lightweight wearable hand motion analysis device utilizing Inertial Measuring Units (IMU) and Force Sensing Resistor (FSR) technology. The device was designed to enhance conventional qualitative evaluation procedures by providing objective and quantitative data. Validation was achieved by investigating the impact of handedness, gender, and exercise habits on finger active range of motion and fingertip force production using the prototype developed. A total of 12 subjects of similar age group were recruited. The subjects' handedness, gender, and exercise habits were recorded, and their hand grip strength, finger active range of motion, and fingertip force production were measured. The analysis revealed significant differences between left- and right-handed individuals, particularly in the flexion of the right index and middle fingers. However, no significant difference in fingertip force exertion was observed between the hands. Additionally, gender-based differences were found in the angular extension and flexion of all fingers, with significant differences observed primarily in extension movements. Fingertip force varied significantly for all fingers, except the left middle finger. These findings indicate that hand dominance, gender, and exercise habits have varying degrees of influence on hand function. Quantitative data on the factors that affect finger range of motion and fingertip force production were successfully derived and analyzed using the developed prototype. This could be useful in benchmarking hand functions and in the design of hand-related rehabilitation and training programs.
