A 8-20GHz Low Phase Noise YIG Oscillator

This paper introduces the design of an 8-20GHz YIG (yttrium-iron-garnet) tuned oscillator with the low phase noise. Application of advanced CAD tools ensures the accurate design and optimization of the oscillator. The oscillator uses a hetero bipolar transistor, and YIG sphere resonator is tuned by bias electromagnetic field. The phase noise of oscillator reaches-93dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10kHz, -125dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 100kHz, -159dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10MHz, and its power output is more than 12dBm over the whole tuning bandwidth. The design method of the oscillator circuit is discussed and test data is provided.
