Metasurface-Loaded Polarization Reconfigurable Dielectric Resonator Antenna

A metasurface-loaded polarization reconfigurable dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is investigated in this paper. The DRA is excited by the annular slot on the ground plane, three polarization states of right-handed (RH), left-handed (LH) circular polarization (CP), and linear polarization (LP) can be switched by shorting the annular slot using two PIN diodes. By loading the metasurface, the proposed antenna achieves a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 2.36 GHz-2.49 GHz for all states. The peak gains of CP and LP states are 5.8 dBic and 6.2 dBi, respectively. Owing to the low-loss dielectric materials and novel metasurface loading technique, the radiation efficiencies are all higher than -0.8 dB (83.1 %). The proposed antenna features flexible polarization reconfigurable capacity, easy control, and high efficiency, so that can be used for smart antenna systems and wireless communication applications.
