Effect of Activation of the 5-HT 4 Receptor System on the Calcium Activity of Neuron-Glial Networks in vitro

Calcium signaling plays a crucial role in memory formation and learning processes, both of which are adversely affected in the pathogenesis of depressive disorders. The serotonin system is involved in the regulation of synapse formation and activity. The current study examined the impact of serotonin system activation on calcium activity within neuron-glial networks in primary cultures of hippocampal cells. Our findings demonstrate that stimulation of 5-HT4R receptors leads to an elevation in the frequency of calcium events within the cells. However, it concurrently reduces the level of synchronization among these events.
