Mitigating Common-Mode Noise in the Totem Pole Bridgeless PFC Using Balance Boost Technique

The global energy system is facing several challenges and risks that will greatly affect energy production and consumption in the future. One potential solution to these problems is the utilization of power electronics converter. In these days, the Totem Pole Bridgeless (TPB) Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter attracts extended interest with development of SiC-MOSFET. Requiring only a few components, it has the advantage of combining very good efficiency with active management of the inrush current when thyristors or silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs) replace the diodes in the low frequency arm. Nevertheless, the common mode (CM) noise (generated by high dV/dt of SiC-MOSFET coupled with the parasitic capacitances) remains the major challenge of the architecture "Totem Pole". To overcome this problem, this paper introduces a technique based on a balance condition of the Wheatstone bridge to nullify conducted noise (150 kHz – 30 MHz) in CM. Furthermore, this study conducts a more in-depth examination of the effect of incorporating an EMI filer on the reduction of CM noise when balance technique is applied to the TPB-PFC converter.
