New Evaluation Concept for Electromagnetic Interference of HVDC Cables to neighboring Buried Pipelines

The demand of energy transition rises worldwide permanently. New HVDC corridors in Germany are mainly constructed to be realized as high voltage DC cables over hundreds of kilometers and the cases of close proximity of HVDC cables to buried metallic pipelines become more frequent. Although several standards and guidelines cover the analysis and mitigation issues of AC interference between high voltage lines (or even AC cables) to the buried metallic infrastructures, there is still a big lack of guidelines, how to deal with electromagnetic interference between DC cables and neighboring buried pipelines. Considering AC guidelines for evaluating DC interference causes a large field of non-solved discussions, as there are significant response differences between AC and DC interference. Especially the interpretation of calculated induced voltage on the pipelines due to neighboring HVDC cables is the major difficulty of the topic. In this paper a new concept for evaluating the electromagnetic interference and the consequences between DC cables and buried pipelines is developed and evaluated within an example of a new long DC cable corridor in Germany (A-Nord).
