PEEC-based Wideband Micro-Model of Inductive Components for Power Electronics Applications

This paper presents modeling approach for the fast and accurate simulations of the power inductors with toroidal core. The proposed method is developed in order to generate a wideband micro-model of a common-mode (CM) chokes represented as Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC). The combination of the analytical solution and 2D static simulation is used to obtain the values of the physical parameters for PEEC, such as the self and mutual inductances and capacitances. The circuit simulations of the PEEC-based model of choke gives possibility to calculate accurately the CM and DM impedances or S-parameters and analyze behavior of the choke over a wide frequency range (from DC up to 100MHz). The validation of the PEEC-based micro-model is done for the chokes with different complexity of the windings using experimental data. Finally, application of the developed modeling technique is demonstrated for EMC filter with different CM choke samples. Impact of the power inductor performance on the filter’s attenuation is analyzed.
