Utilization of the Return Conductor for Cancellation of CM Currents for a PMSM Inverter Drive

This paper describes an injection method for the reduction of Common Mode (CM) noise. This is done for a drive train of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) with an inverter where there is a pre-defined return path for All Electric Aircraft (AEA). A simplified model is presented which shows the potential of this type of injection, by which it is expanded to a three-phase system by use of a PMSM model. In the lower frequency range, below 1 MHz, the Insertion Loss (IL) is still at a constant level. This can lead to further reduction of the volume and weight of the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) filter by shifting the cutoff frequency of the passive filter.
