Virtual Triaxial Setup Modeling for Numerical Determination of Transfer Impedance of Shielded Cables

In this paper, we present a numerical approach for analysis of cable shields, where a computational model is constructed to represent Triaxial Setup measurement procedure. Transfer impedance is calculated using multi-conductor transmission line (MTL) approach. Virtual Triaxial Setup is divided into 2D cross-sections along the axis of the cable. After that, frequency dependent P.U.L. parameters are calculated for each cross-section using Finite Element Method (FEM) for calculation of capacitance matrices (C) and Method of Moments (MoM) for calculation of inductance (L) and resistance (R) matrices. The obtained R, L and C matrices are used to construct the equivalent circuit, which is calculated by specialized Modified Nodal Analysis based circuit solver. This approach can be applied to various types of shields (solid, braided, spiral and tape), materials, and their combinations. Results obtained with Virtual Triaxial Setup modeling approach for different types of shields are in good match with measurements and with analytic solutions, when applicable.
