Enable Cross-domain QoS for Internet-Scale Metaverse

The lack of cross-domain QoS support in the current Internet makes it difficult to support Internet-scale Metaverse services with users scattered around the globe. We envision that a metaverse network broker is needed to coordinate the network providers on the existing Internet infrastructure and provision the premier network services. To this end we introduce three key components, all based on existing standards or some moderate standard extensions, to jointly form a solution framework that enables IPv6-based end-to-end cross-domain QoS for Internet-scale Metaverse: (1) The application-aware DNS allows metaverse users to express their network service requirements using the standard DNS service and get the response that represent an agreement that the network will abide; (2) The domain level source routing makes each network provider a responsible entity and abstracts away the intra-domain routing and forwarding mechanisms to meet its share of responsibility; (3) The domain-level OAM and in-band network telemetry monitor the contracted metaverse traffic directly and in real-time to guarantee the QoS targets are met and if not, to easily and accurately identify the culprit. Several metaverse use cases are presented to demonstrate the potential of the architecture. The design is compatible with today’s Internet architecture and incrementally deployable on the existing infrastructure with only moderate updates. The router prototype built with existing programmable devices can support line-speed packet processing and forwarding at a low implementation cost. We expect our work can trigger more detailed design in the research and Internet standard communities to make global metaverse a reality by solving the most challenging cross-domain QoS issue.
