Motor Current Signal Analysis for the Diagnostics of Localized Bearing Defects

This paper discusses the detection of a single point bearing defect in an induction machine using the motor current signature analysis in an induction machine. The idea is to understand the relation between the detection of such faults, the link between mechanical vibrations and radial displacement of the shaft caused by the faults, the sensitivity of detecting the fault based on a magnetic circuit analysis leading to its reflection on stator current. The impact of some of the other parameters related to machine design and bearing design is also discussed. Finally, the paper is concluded by discussing how motor current signature analysis (MCSA) can assist the diagnostics or prognostics.
