Static, Dynamic and Mixed Eccentricity Fault Detection Using MCSA and Stray Flux Monitoring via Finite Element Analysis

This paper analyzes detection methods of static eccentricity (SE), dynamic eccentricity (DE) and mixed eccentricity (ME) faults in a squirrel-cage induction motor (IM) by finite element analysis (FEA). Many methods have been created to identify and differentiate these faults, enabling appropriate safety precautions to be implemented to reduce their impact. Motor current signature analysis (MCSA) as well as the stray flux of the motor is used in order to verify whether these techniques can identify the presence of the three different types of eccentricity faults. Also, since the researched motor produces Principal Slot Harmonics (PSH), the zero-sequence current spectrum is investigated (SFD-MCSA Method) in the case of only-static eccentricity. The work is carried out with transient simulations using the commercially available finite element package - Ansys Maxwell.
