Optimal Configuration of Feeder-Tied Distributed Energy Hub with Refined Modeling of Photovoltaic Power Output

High-efficiency multi-energy systems constitute an effective means for tackling the challenges of environmental pollution and energy crisis. A significant component pertaining to economic operation of such systems is their configuration, which includes both sizing and operation strategy. In this regard, this work introduces an optimal configuration method for integrated energy systems that are tied to distribution feeders, based on the concept of energy hub and Distflow power-flow model. The goal is to mitigate the variability and uncertainty of PV generation, while keeping minimum the total annualized investment, maintenance, and operational costs. To achieve this, physical model chain is used to attain PV power output from weather variables, and the optimal configuration model is constructed considering the operational constraints of each component, as well as constraints on within-hub and power-flow energy balance. The method is applied to a modified IEEE 33-bus radial distribution system for case study and operational state analysis. The results demonstrate that the model based on the physical model chain can better approximate the actual PV power generation profile, resulting in a higher total cost of $4.8 million than that based on conventional PV modeling.
